Microsoft Dynamics GP: Support Today, a Plan for What Comes Next
If your company runs Microsoft Dynamics GP, you have two questions: how long can we keep using this, and what do we do when we can’t? This page answers both.
Microsoft has announced the end of life for Dynamics GP. Existing systems remain supported for several more years, so there is no emergency — but there is a deadline, and companies that plan early move on their own schedule.
Integrated Systems Solutions has supported Dynamics GP customers since 1991, when it was known as Great Plains Software. We keep GP systems running today and help companies plan the move when they are ready.
Which Lifecycle Policy Governs Your Installation
Where Microsoft Dynamics GP Stands Now
Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP is a mid-market enterprise resource planning solution for small and mid-sized organizations. It began as accounting software and grew into full ERP software over three decades, running on a Microsoft SQL Server relational database — which is what makes its reporting and data analysis so flexible. Dynamics GP is now closed to new customers. Microsoft ended new perpetual license sales in April 2025 and new subscription licensing in April 2026. If your organization is not already running GP, it is no longer available to license.
For existing customers, the picture is more stable than the headlines suggest. The product is still supported; the current version was released in October 2025, and customers on active plans can continue adding user seats. One detail worth checking: the widely quoted 2029 and 2031 dates apply to GP 18.2 and later, under Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy. If you run GP 2018 R2 or earlier, your version follows the older Fixed Lifecycle Policy and its date may have already passed. Confirming which policy governs your installation is the first step in any realistic timeline.
The End of Life Announcement and What It Means for Dynamics GP Customers
December 31, 2029
April 30, 2031
Ended April 2026
Can Add Seats
Microsoft has published the official end-of-support dates for Dynamics GP under its Modern Lifecycle Policy:
- Mainstream support ends December 31st, 2029. After this date Microsoft will no longer provide product enhancements, regulatory (tax) updates, service packs or technical support
- Security updates and annual service/enhancement plans end April 30th, 2031
New customer licensing has already stopped: perpetual licenses ended in April 2025 and subscription licenses ended in April 2026. Existing customers can still add user licenses through the full lifecycle. And ISS will continue supporting you and this incredible platform until you are ready to move to your next ERP solution. There is no emergency, but these dates are firm — waiting until the last couple of years leaves far less room to evaluate options and move on your own schedule. Confirming which version and lifecycle policy govern your installation is the first practical step in building a realistic timeline.
Dynamics GP Support From Integrated Systems Solutions
Day-to-Day Technical Support
Posting problems, reporting issues, permissions, module behavior, month-end oddities. Existing customers submit issues through our support request process.
New Seats for Existing Dynamics GP Customers
If you already run Dynamics GP and need to add users, we can handle that. Existing GP customers only — new licensing ended in April 2026.
Year-End, Tax, and Regulatory Updates
Payroll and tax updates continue through the mainstream support window. We apply them, test them against your configuration, and make sure year-end close is not what breaks.
Reporting and Business Intelligence
GP reporting has always depended on what you build around it. We work with Management Reporter, SQL Server Reporting Services, refreshable Excel reports, and Power BI to get financial statements and operational dashboards out of the system. If reporting is currently a manual export-and-rebuild routine, that is usually fixable without replacing the ERP.
Integrations and Custom Business Processes
Most long-running GP installations carry integrations and customizations built on custom legacy code by people who have since moved on. We maintain those, document what was undocumented, and keep the connections working.
What Dynamics GP's Capabilities Still Do Well
Most installations were licensed as a Starter Pack or Extended Pack bundle, with modules added over time.
GP’s accounting functionality is well understood by accountants, which is not a small thing. General ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, fixed assets, and multi-company operations are all battle-tested.
Microsoft Dynamics GP modules cover more ground than many GP users realize. Financials handle general ledger and accounts payable; distribution modules handle inventory, purchase orders, and supply chain management. The software also includes modules for human resources and payroll management, one reason finance teams are reluctant to leave. Most installations were licensed as a Starter Pack or Extended Pack bundle, with modules added over time.
For companies in distribution and manufacturing, GP has handled order processing and daily operational load reliably for decades.
Where It Falls Short Now
GP was never designed as a cloud-native platform. It is an on-premises system requiring server maintenance and scheduled upgrades; integrations rely on custom code rather than modern connectors, and remote access was added rather than designed in. GP can be hosted on Microsoft Azure, which solves the hardware problem without making it a cloud application. The gaps that most impact operational efficiency are real-time reporting, mobile access, and the modern tools your team now expects.

When Microsoft Will End Dynamics GP Support, and What Changes
Microsoft will end Dynamics GP support on December 31, 2029, for product enhancements, regulatory updates, and technical support, with security patches continuing to April 30, 2031. Previous versions governed by the older Fixed Lifecycle Policy may already be past their dates. Running unsupported ERP is a business risk, not just an IT one.
Tax and Regulatory Updates Stop
Payroll tax tables and compliance changes stop arriving — a fast problem for anyone running payroll across multiple jurisdictions.
Enhanced Security Requirements Get Harder to Meet
Once security updates end, GP is an unpatched system holding your financial data. Insurance carriers and auditors increasingly ask about unsupported software.
The Pool of GP Expertise Keeps Shrinking
The Dynamics GP community has always been a real strength — a deep bench of consultants, developers, and add-on vendors. That bench is thinning as people retire or move to other platforms.
Your Options When You Are Ready to Move
There is no single right answer, and any partner who gives you one without asking about your operation is selling, not advising. We implement both platforms below.
For most GP customers we work with — particularly distributors and product companies — Acumatica is where we point first. It is a cloud ERP built for growing businesses, with strong distribution and inventory functionality and consumption-based licensing rather than per-user fees, which matters when warehouse staff, shop floor users, and outside sales all need access.
Eastman Music and Harbor Truck Bodies both run on Acumatica with ISS.
Business Central is Microsoft’s own successor path and a legitimate option, especially if your team is standardized on Microsoft 365. It integrates natively with Outlook, Excel, Power BI, and the rest of Dynamics 365.
What Microsoft Recommends
Microsoft is encouraging customers to migrate to Dynamics 365 Business Central, and more broadly encourages migration to Dynamics 365 cloud solutions. Microsoft continues to direct investment there rather than toward new features for GP.
Worth knowing — and also worth knowing that Microsoft’s recommendation reflects Microsoft’s product line, not an assessment of your operation. We weigh both modern ERP solutions against what you actually run.
How We Help You Decide
Licensing model, user count, inventory complexity, reporting needs, and how much customization you carry all change the answer — so does whether you have the internal resources to support a bigger platform.
Our focus is which system fits your operation and delivers real benefits, not which is easier for us to sell. Our ERP consulting team runs that evaluation as its own engagement, not a sales step.
Discovery workshops
We map what you actually do in GP today, including the workarounds and spreadsheets, because those are real requirements.
Historical data planning
We decide together what financial history moves, what gets archived, and what stays accessible.
Customizations and integrations
Every modification gets evaluated — some need rebuilding, some were workarounds for GP limits the new platform handles natively, some are unused.
Working prototype
You see your data and processes running before committing to the full build.
User acceptance testing
Your team validates against real day-to-day work.
Go-live and support
We move you to production and stay engaged afterward.
How We Handle a Dynamics GP Migration
A GP migration is mostly a data and process project, not a software install. Our professional services team runs the transition in stages so your future platform is validated before you depend on it.
Most projects run several months to a year depending on scope and data condition. Starting early lets you move deliberately rather than on a deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Microsoft Dynamics GP discontinued?
Dynamics GP has reached end of life. New customer licensing has ended and Microsoft has published end dates for mainstream support and security updates. Existing systems remain supported until then.
Can I still buy Dynamics GP?
Not as a new customer. New perpetual licensing ended April 2025 and new subscription licensing ended April 2026. If you already run GP, you can still add user seats through ISS.
When does Dynamics GP support end?
Mainstream support, including product enhancements and tax and regulatory updates, ends December 31, 2029. Security updates continue to April 30, 2031.
How long does a GP migration take?
Typically several months to a year, driven by data volume, customization, and integration complexity more than company size.
Do you still support Dynamics GP if we are not migrating yet?
Yes. Many of our GP customers are not moving this year, and we support them regardless.
